Safe Foods

What are the safe foods for those of us who have colitis? Which foods should we avoid that may aggravate symptoms? How can we determine which foods are the culprits?

After going through several flare-ups and remission cycle, there may be foods you can identify that can worsen your symptoms. Below is a summary of what has worked for me and could be a starting point to reconsider your diet.

SAFE:

· Banana
· Papaya
· Cantaloupe
· Honeydew
· Cooked Dates
· Apple Sauce
· Avocado
· Sweet Potato (skinless)
· Potato (skinless)
· Carrots
· Nagaimo Yam
· Taro
· Daikon Raddish
· Lettuce
· Cooked Spinach
· Squash
· Zucchini
· Steamed Fish
· Baked Chicken
· Eggs
· Rice
· Quinoa

AVOID:

· Fruits with skin and seeds
· Dried Fruits
· Citrus Fruits (lemon, orange)
· Gassy vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, asparagus, artichoke, corn
· Beans and Legumes
· Soy products (ex. Tofu)
· Nuts and Seeds (creamy nut butter may be okay)
· Pickled Vegetables (Kimchi, Sauerkraut)
· Whole grain products
· Caffeine
· Milk
· Alcohol
· Processed Foods
· Sugary snacks
· Spicy Food
· Fried Food
