How Digestion Works

Mouth

  • Carbohydrate metabolism starts with the production of amylase from saliva produced from chewing action in the mouth

Stomach

  • HCL + Pepsinogen -> Pepsin to start protein breakdown
  • Food is broken into small pieces with churning in the stomach

Small Intestines

  • Release of amylase, pepsin to breakdown protein and carbohydrates further
  • Receives bile that is produced from liver and stored in the gallbladder to emulsify fat for absorption
  • Absorption of nutrients into bloodstream to be processed by the liver

Large Intestine

  • Reabsorb water from remaining food and transport for elimination
  • Gut flora and microbiome lives here
