Why is it so hard to stop?

Stimulants (coffee, alcohol, drugs)

Stimulants has the same effect as stress. Epinephrine is released to kick off the "fight or flight" response. Cortisol increases and converts stored glycogen to sugar and released in to blood stream. Digestion shuts down to divert energy to extremities. This is why most feel an increase in focus and energy after consumption of coffee. When digestion shuts down, nutrients and minerals are not being absorbed, therefore excess amounts of coffee is not good for the health. When stimulants become overused, more and more may be needed to bring the same affects of adrenaline boost from cortisol release. Prolonged stress results in low hydrochloric acid necessary for digestive health.

Habits are hard to change. Here are some things you can implement to help healthy habits stick:

1. Do not bring junk food home from the store.
2. Prepare healthy snacks in advance to avoid snacking on something unhealthy.
3. Prepare list of restaurants you like when dining out.
4. Ask the server what is in the food when dining out and alternative options.
5. Plan out your grocery list and allow a limited time down processed food isles.
